Ontario Linux Fest 2007 and WeatherEngine changes

Ontario Linux Fest 2007

I had a good time at Ontario Linux Fest 2007. This being the inaugural event there were some small annoyances like lack of plugs for laptops. They did have free WiFi and there was time for me to hack on the weatherengine while there. This conference has a mix of corporate and geek culture and slightly differs from OLS (Ottawa Linux Symposium) but it's likely to grow and evolve over time.

While there, I met Marcel Gagné who presented Aaron Seigo's slides on KDE 4.0 upcoming features, frameworks (he had to skip some of the developmental slides as the audience level didn't appear to be too technical). He also gave a demo of an October 12th build of Plasma showing a few of the plasmoids and demoed the new KDE 4 port of kickoff, raptor and Dolphin. He didn't show the sexy new Oxygen style or window decorations though Sad

Although Marcel mentioned Plasma was still in heavy development, apparently, people just weren't paying attention. During Q&A, there were two negative comments. One being, "I hope kicker is still there, the panel looks dumbed down" and the other comment was, "Can I turn all this bloat (referring to Plasma) off?".

With the blood boiling within me, I blurted out that kicker was going away because Plasma would be handling the panel now and to the other person I politely reminded them Plasma is still in heavy development and that things were changing rapidly.

I wish people wouldn't jump to conclusions and ridicule KDE/Qt as 'bloat' or criticize a project in such heavy development

I went to a few other talks/bofs and chatted with some CLUE (Canadian Linux Users Exchange) people about making sure we don't get evil things like DMCA in Canada. The conference was just one day and I won a Ruby pocket book (The prizes were on a first come first serve basis, so by the time I had won, that was the last prize left. When it comes to script languages, I'm a python guy Smiling

What would a Linux conference be without posing with Tux? Eye-wink

And another shot

Sorry, my cell phone camera sucks, I didn't bring my digital camera.

WeatherEngine changes

A night before, Aaron helped me fix up the weatherengine and ions to be fully asynchronous. This means the backend is even faster now and much more flexable. The BBC ion plugin should be able to be finished now. I have also begun a very preliminary C++ plasmoid but there is no screenshot worthy to display yet.

I showed off the weatherengine goodness to Marcel and he wanted that info (ooohs ahhs) for any weather plasmoid he'd use Smiling

Being angry is not needed

You mentioned: "With the blood boiling within me, I blurted out that kicker was going away because Plasma would be handling the panel now and to the other person I politely reminded them Plasma is still in heavy development and that things were changing rapidly."

I don't understand why you get angry just because they didn't know kicker was in development. Yes, this might have been said right before in a presentation. However, people never remember everything that was said in a presentation. Just because something was said, doesn't mean they had been paying attention. That always happens with presentations or trainings btw. If something is really important, mention it 3 times in 3 different ways.

Regarding the actual comments:

"I hope kicker is still there, the panel looks dumbed down". Seems to me like a valid question. How would the user know if dumbing down was the intention or not, even if he did know about it being in development? Could very well be a Dolphin-style simplification.

"Can I turn all this bloat (referring to Plasma) off?". He might have a slow pc and be concerned he cannot run KDE anymore, or perhaps he just likes to tweak KDE for speed. Why not mention that 1) it is in development 2) it can be turned off 3) it doesn't have to be turned off because KDE/Qt will make Plasma fast on any pc.

The tone they used to ask these questions might not have been the most constructive one. But that just means they care. No need to get angry.

Re: Being angry is not needed

As the guy who did the presentation, I have to say that your blurt didn't sound in the least bit angry, upset, pissed off or what have you. If you were indeed angry, I had a hard time picking it out and you might need to work on that whole anger thing.

I only wish I had been savvy enough to say that the new KDE could be slimmed down to run on just about anything, so no worries. Sadly, I've been so focused on what's new, cool, exciting, and plamish that I hadn't bothered asking simple questions like "Can I turn plasma off and will kicker still exist?"

re: Being angry is not needed

Well, I didn't yell at them in a negative tone. The Plasma panel you see now will have more complex functionality, it's just not ready yet, ie, its still in heavy development. As for the second response, this hasn't been discussed yet as to how Plasma will deal with slower machines (as far as I know), it still has to be made to work first, then worry about figuring out how to disable things. Right now, there is no way to disable Plasma.

Since one of them knew what kicker was I assume he would have understood Plasma is not a finished project, granted, he might not have known kicker is going away forever.
